Care

Dust with a dry, soft cloth, and a dry soft brush for the folds and the face. For a mark, a barely damp cloth and nothing else — solvents, scouring creams and household sprays lift hand-painted detail and it cannot be repainted to match. Keep it out of long direct sunlight, which fades the colours over the years. Made for indoors. If you want this figure for a garden or a grotto, ask us — pieces meant to stand outside are finished differently.

About this piece

St Bernadette kneeling, as she is nearly always shown — the girl looking up at the grotto. Hand-painted resin at 50 cm. Made to be set beside a Lourdes figure, and sized so it sits below it.

Bernadette Soubirous was fourteen, asthmatic and very poor when she saw the lady at Massabielle in 1858. She was disbelieved, questioned by police and clergy, and never changed her account. She later entered the convent at Nevers as Sister Marie-Bernard, refused every attempt to make her a spectacle, died at thirty-five, and was canonised in 1933.
