Dust with a dry, soft cloth, and a dry soft brush for the folds and the face. For a mark, a barely damp cloth and nothing else — solvents, scouring creams and household sprays lift hand-painted detail and it cannot be repainted to match. Keep it out of long direct sunlight, which fades the colours over the years. Made for indoors. If you want this figure for a garden or a grotto, ask us — pieces meant to stand outside are finished differently.

About this piece
The grotto at Lourdes as a pair: Our Lady of Lourdes at 80 cm, hands joined, and St Bernadette at 50 cm, kneeling and looking up at her. Bought together for €240 rather than €260 apart. Set them side by side on a table, or at two levels in a garden grotto.
On 11 February 1858 Bernadette Soubirous went out for firewood and saw a lady in white in the hollow of the rock at Massabielle. She knelt and prayed the rosary, and the lady prayed it with her. Seventeen more times Bernadette came back to kneel there, and it is that moment — the girl on her knees and the lady above her — that these two figures keep.
The devotion
A single statue of Our Lady is a figure to pray to. The pair is a figure to pray with: Bernadette on her knees shows you where to put yourself. It is the closest a house can come to the grotto itself, where pilgrims kneel where she knelt.
Bernadette died at Nevers on 16 April 1879 — four months before the apparition at Knock — and that is the day her feast is kept. The two figures together recall that Our Lady chose the poorest girl in the town, who could barely read her catechism, and asked her above all to pray and to do penance for sinners.
Where it suits
Set them at two levels if you can — Our Lady raised on a shelf, a step or a stone, St Bernadette lower and a little to one side, looking up. On a sideboard or in a hall niche that small change of height makes the scene.
The figures are hand-painted resin, and the shop’s care note marks them for indoors. If you are planning them for an outdoor grotto, ask us first — pieces meant to stand outside are finished differently — or set them in a covered porch or indoor grotto.
