St Joseph: patron of families, workers and a happy death
He says not one word in the Gospels, yet God trusted him with Mary and with the Child Jesus. St Joseph is the saint of ordinary work, family life and quiet faithfulness.

Who he was
What we know of St Joseph comes from the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. He was of the house of David, a carpenter or craftsman of Nazareth, betrothed to Mary. When he learned she was with child, he resolved to divorce her quietly, until an angel told him in a dream to take her as his wife. Four times in Matthew’s Gospel he is guided by a dream, and each time he gets up and does what he is told, without a word.
He took Mary and the Child to Bethlehem, to Egypt and home to Nazareth; he searched with Mary for the twelve-year-old Jesus in the Temple; and he taught Jesus his trade, so that people later asked, “Is this not the carpenter’s son?” He is not mentioned during Christ’s public life, and tradition holds that he died before it began, in the arms of Jesus and Mary — which is why he is patron of a happy death.
His patronages and feasts
Patron of the Universal Church
Declared by Blessed Pius IX on 8 December 1870. As he protected the Holy Family, so he protects the Church.
19 March — St Joseph, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary
His principal feast, a solemnity, usually falling in Lent.
1 May — St Joseph the Worker
Instituted by Pope Pius XII in 1955, to honour the dignity of human work.
Patron of families and fathers
Head of the Holy Family, and the model of a husband and father who protects without dominating.
Patron of workers and craftsmen
Carpenters, builders, tradespeople and anyone who works with their hands.
Patron of a happy death
Because he died, by tradition, with Jesus and Mary beside him.
St Joseph in recent years
Pope Francis marked the 150th anniversary of Joseph’s proclamation as patron of the Church with the apostolic letter Patris Corde — “With a Father’s Heart” — on 8 December 2020, and declared a Year of St Joseph that ran until 8 December 2021. In it he describes Joseph as a beloved, tender, obedient, accepting, creatively courageous and working father, “a father in the shadows”. The Litany of St Joseph was updated in 2021 with seven new invocations.
In Ireland, St Joseph has a special place because he stood beside Our Lady at Knock, his head inclined towards her. It was on his feast in 2021 that Pope Francis raised Knock to the status of an international shrine; see Our Lady of Knock.
Where a St Joseph statue belongs
Traditionally, many Catholic homes keep St Joseph near the front door or in the kitchen, the place where the work of the house is done. A statue of St Joseph with the Child Jesus suits a family home, a new father, a couple expecting a baby, or a house blessing. St Joseph the Worker, with his tools, suits a workshop, an office, a builder’s yard or a business.
In a church, Joseph traditionally stands on one side of the sanctuary with Our Lady on the other, and the two statues should be chosen to match in size and style; see church statues. Schools and religious communities named for him often have him in the front hall. And because he is patron of a happy death, a St Joseph is a fitting memorial or a gift for someone who is dying.
A short prayer said by many: “St Joseph, foster-father of Jesus, pray for us.” In difficulty, the Church’s old advice is simply Ite ad Joseph — “Go to Joseph.”

Questions people ask
When is the feast of St Joseph?
19 March is his main feast, a solemnity. 1 May is the feast of St Joseph the Worker.
Why is St Joseph the patron of a happy death?
Tradition holds that he died before Jesus’ public ministry, with Jesus and Mary at his side — the death every Christian would wish for.
Should I bury a St Joseph statue to sell my house?
That is a folk custom, not a practice of the Church, and burying a statue upside down in the garden is hardly the honour due to a saint. Better to pray to St Joseph — a novena is traditional — and give his statue a place of honour in the new home.
Which St Joseph statue is best for a family home?
St Joseph holding the Child Jesus is the favourite for a home, because it shows him as a father. For a workplace, St Joseph the Worker.
Is St Joseph a good gift for a new father?
One of the best. He is patron of fathers and of families. See also religious gifts.

Religious gifts
A statue is the kind of present that outlives the day it was given for. Here is how to choose one for each of the big moments in a Catholic life, and how to have it delivered anywhere in Ireland.
Businesses and care homes
Some of the most-prayed-before statues in Ireland are not in churches at all: they are in nursing homes, hospital chapels, funeral homes and the quiet rooms of hotels. This page is for the people who look after those places.
Our Lady of Knock
On a wet Thursday evening in August 1879, people in a small Mayo village saw Our Lady, St Joseph and St John the Evangelist at the gable wall of their parish church. Not a word was spoken. Ireland has been going to Knock ever since.
The Christmas crib
Every crib on every Irish sideboard goes back to one night in an Italian hill town, when St Francis of Assisi wanted to see with his own eyes how the Child of Bethlehem was laid in a manger.
