Hand-painted resin
Hand-painted resin religious statues
Hand-painted resin is how most people bring a statue into the house: in colour, light enough for a shelf, and posted anywhere in Ireland for one flat charge. Here is what it is good at, and where marble is the better choice.

What hand-painted resin is
A resin statue is cast in a mould and then painted by hand: the faces, the eyes, the blue of Our Lady’s mantle, the red of the Sacred Heart, gilded edges and the small details of a rosary or a lily. Because each one is painted by hand, two castings of the same statue will differ slightly — a property of the object, not a fault.
Colour is the reason people choose resin. Most of the statues Irish families grew up with were painted, and a painted face holds the attention in a way plain stone does not, especially for children. It is also the reason resin is mostly an indoor material: painted colour keeps best out of strong sun and hard weather.

The honest pros and cons
For: colour
Painted faces, robes and details — the statue as most of us remember it from a grandmother’s house.
For: lightness
Light enough for a shelf, a sill or a prayer group that carries its statue to each meeting.
For: price and postage
Resin usually costs less than a marble statue of the same subject, and it is posted anywhere in Ireland for a flat €15 per order, however many pieces are in it.
Against: it can chip
If a resin statue is knocked off a shelf, it will chip or break. Place it where it will not be brushed by coats, bags or curtains.
Against: paint and weather
Painted colour keeps longest indoors or in a sheltered spot. For a garden, a grotto or a memorial, marble is the safer choice; for a particular painted piece, check its page or ask us.
Against: not one of a kind
Resin statues are cast, so others will own the same model — though each is painted by hand.

Looking after a painted statue
Dust with a soft cloth or brush; if it needs more, a barely damp cloth is enough. Never scrub, and keep solvents and spray cleaners away — they lift paint. A spot out of strong direct sun keeps the colours freshest for longest. The full notes are on our story page.
Painted resin is the usual choice for statues for the home, for a classroom prayer focus, and for gifts — see religious gifts and First Holy Communion gifts.
Resin questions
Is resin a cheap material?
It is less costly than marble, but a well-made, hand-painted resin statue is a lasting piece. What you are paying for is the modelling of the face and the quality of the painting.
Can a resin statue go outside?
Painted colour keeps best indoors or in a sheltered spot. Some pieces are offered for outdoor use — check that statue’s page or ask us before you buy. For an exposed garden or a grotto, choose marble.
How much is postage on a resin statue?
A flat €15 per order anywhere in the Republic of Ireland, however many resin statues are in it.
Why does my statue look slightly different from the photograph?
Each statue is painted by hand, so small differences in shade and detail between castings are normal and part of the object.
Can a chipped resin statue be repaired?
Small chips can often be touched in with model paint by a careful hand. If it arrived chipped, though, send us a photograph within 48 hours and we will replace it or refund it.
Can I send a resin statue as a gift to someone in Ireland?
Yes. Put the recipient’s address in as the delivery address at checkout. It is posted for the same flat €15.
