Care

Dust with a dry, soft cloth, and a dry soft brush for the folds and the face. For a mark, a barely damp cloth and nothing else — solvents, scouring creams and household sprays lift hand-painted detail and it cannot be repainted to match. Keep it out of long direct sunlight, which fades the colours over the years. Made for indoors. If you want this figure for a garden or a grotto, ask us — pieces meant to stand outside are finished differently.

About this piece

Our Lady of Fatima with the Immaculate Heart shown on her breast — the right hand raised, the left held out, a gold-edged mantle over the white gown, standing on the holm oak where the children saw her. Hand-painted resin at 80 cm: tall enough to carry a hall, small enough for a shelf that will take it.

Our Lady appeared to Lúcia, Francisco and Jacinta at the Cova da Iria on the thirteenth of each month from May to October 1917, standing over a small holm oak. She asked for the rosary said daily and for penance, and in June she showed the children her heart, encircled by thorns — the devotion to her Immaculate Heart that this figure carries. The last of the six apparitions was witnessed by a crowd of tens of thousands.

The devotion

Fatima changed how Ireland says the rosary. The short prayer Our Lady taught the children in July 1917 — “O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell; lead all souls to heaven, especially those most in need of thy mercy” — is the one said at the end of each decade in Irish homes and churches to this day.

This figure shows the Immaculate Heart on her breast, encircled with thorns, as Our Lady showed it to the children in June 1917. The devotion that goes with it is the Five First Saturdays: confession, Communion, the rosary and a quarter of an hour’s meditation, in reparation, on the first Saturday of five months running. Her feast is 13 May; Francisco and Jacinta were canonised on that day in 2017.

Where it suits

Painted resin lets the Immaculate Heart, the gold-edged mantle and the holm oak be seen, which suits a hall, a family rosary corner, a May altar, or a classroom or parish room where the rosary is said. It is made for indoors.
