Care

Dust with a dry, soft cloth. For a mark, wipe with a barely damp cloth and dry it straight away — marble is porous, and standing water leaves a ring. Never use bleach, vinegar, lemon or a cream cleaner. Acids etch the polish, and an etched surface cannot be put back. Suitable for outdoors, where it will weather slowly to a softer surface.

Delivery

Delivered to any county in Ireland for €285, or collect it free in Termonbarry, Co. Roscommon once it is paid in full — the meeting place is agreed with Thomas on WhatsApp.

If it arrives damaged, we replace it — shipping & returns.

About this piece

Our Lady as she was seen at Knock — standing, crowned, hands raised and eyes lifted. Carved by hand in marble at three feet, for a church, a shrine or a garden.

On the wet evening of 21 August 1879, fifteen people of Knock in County Mayo watched an apparition at the gable of their parish church for about two hours: Our Lady, St Joseph, St John the Evangelist, and a lamb on an altar. Nothing was said. The silence of Knock is part of what is remembered about it, and the shrine there is now Ireland’s national one.

The devotion

Knock is Ireland’s own apparition, and it is unlike almost every other. Mary McLoughlin and Mary Byrne were the first to see it, and they ran for the others; young and old stood in the rain at the gable wall that August evening in 1879, praying the rosary. No message was given and no secret entrusted. The people of a poor Mayo parish in a hungry year were simply visited, and they knelt.

Two Church commissions examined the witnesses, in 1879–80 and again in 1935–36, and the shrine grew into the national Marian shrine of Ireland. St John Paul II came as a pilgrim in 1979, the centenary year, and Pope Francis in 2018. In Ireland the feast of Our Lady of Knock is kept on 17 August, and the great Knock novena runs each year in the middle of that month.

Our Lady at Knock is crowned, her hands raised in the old gesture of prayer and her eyes lifted towards heaven. A statue of her is a way of keeping that silence in a home or a parish: a figure that asks nothing but that you pray with her.

Where it suits

Carved in marble, this is a statue for a Knock grotto at a parish church or a school, a churchyard, a convent garden, or a family garden that wants a lasting Marian shrine. The shop marks it suitable for outdoors, and the unpainted stone sits well against Irish weather, ivy and old walls.

Indoors it suits a church niche or a large hall. A Knock statue is often chosen to mark a pilgrimage, a parent’s anniversary or a house built on home ground; it is a piece meant to stay where you put it.

Questions

Is this Our Lady of Knock marble or resin?
Hand-carved marble, unpainted, so no two are exactly alike. Expect small differences in grain, colour and detail from the photograph.
Can it go outside in a garden or grotto?
Yes. The shop’s care note marks it suitable for outdoors, where marble weathers slowly to a softer surface. See how to make a garden grotto and our outdoor care guide.
Can you make the full Knock group — St Joseph, St John and the Lamb?
Not from the catalogue, but marble can be carved to order. Tell us what you have in mind and the space it must fill, and we will quote for it before anything is begun.
How is it delivered?
Marble is too heavy for the post, so we deliver it ourselves to any county in Ireland, at the delivery charge shown on this page. Or collect it free in Termonbarry, Co. Roscommon once it is paid in full; the meeting place is agreed with Thomas on WhatsApp (+353 85 285 1015). Details are on shipping & returns.
