Care

Dust with a dry, soft cloth, and a dry soft brush for the folds and the face. For a mark, a barely damp cloth and nothing else — solvents, scouring creams and household sprays lift hand-painted detail and it cannot be repainted to match. Keep it out of long direct sunlight, which fades the colours over the years. Made for indoors. If you want this figure for a garden or a grotto, ask us — pieces meant to stand outside are finished differently.

About this piece

The Lourdes figure in hand-painted resin — hands joined in prayer, the white gown under a blue mantle edged in gold, a rosary falling from the hands and roses on the rock at her feet. Three heights: 50 cm for a bedroom or a sill, 80 cm for a hall table, 100 cm for an oratory or a parish shrine.

In 1858 Bernadette Soubirous, a miller’s daughter of fourteen, saw a lady at the grotto of Massabielle eighteen times. The lady named herself the Immaculate Conception and asked that a chapel be built and that people come in procession. Lourdes has been a place of pilgrimage ever since, and this is the figure that stands in the grotto there.

The devotion

For generations of Irish people Lourdes was the pilgrimage of a lifetime: the diocesan trains and planes in summer, the sick brought by the volunteers of the Order of Malta and the parish committees, the candlelight procession and the bottle of water brought home for a neighbour. A Lourdes statue on the landing is often the souvenir of exactly that journey.

Lourdes is also the reason so many Irish parishes have a grotto. In the Marian Year of 1954 grottos were built across the country, most of them copying this figure in the hollow of a rock. Her feast is 11 February, the day of the first apparition, which the Church now keeps as the World Day of the Sick.

Where it suits

This is the familiar Lourdes figure in painted resin, in three heights, so it can go almost anywhere indoors: the smallest for a bedroom or a sill, the middle for a hall table, the tallest for an oratory or a parish shrine. White and blue with the gold edge reads clearly in a dim corner.

It is made for indoors. For a garden grotto, look at the marble Lourdes figures, or ask us about a piece finished for outside.

Questions

Which Lourdes statue should I choose?
This is the everyday Lourdes figure in three heights. The Hand-Painted version carries more painted detail; the pair with St Bernadette gives the whole grotto scene; the marble ones are for outdoors and churches.
Can I put it in my garden grotto?
Not this piece — it is made for indoors. The marble Lourdes figures are carved for outdoors; see grotto statues.
Would it make a gift for someone who is ill?
Many people give Our Lady of Lourdes to someone who is sick, because of the healing associated with the spring at Lourdes and the World Day of the Sick on 11 February. A small one suits a bedside.
