Care

Dust with a dry, soft cloth, and a dry soft brush for the folds and the face. For a mark, a barely damp cloth and nothing else — solvents, scouring creams and household sprays lift hand-painted detail and it cannot be repainted to match. Keep it out of long direct sunlight, which fades the colours over the years. Made for indoors. If you want this figure for a garden or a grotto, ask us — pieces meant to stand outside are finished differently.

About this piece

The Lourdes figure with the painting taken further: a deep blue mantle shaded into its folds, a gold-edged veil, a long rosary, and roses and the spring on the rock at her feet, with “N.D. Lourdes” on the base. Hand-painted resin at 70 cm.

In 1858 Bernadette Soubirous, a miller's daughter of fourteen, saw a lady at the grotto of Massabielle eighteen times. The lady named herself the Immaculate Conception and asked that a chapel be built and that people come in procession. The spring Bernadette uncovered at her word still flows at the foot of the grotto, and this is the figure that stands above it.

The devotion

Bernadette always insisted that no statue was like the lady she saw — she was disappointed even by the famous one in the grotto. What painters and carvers can do is keep the details she gave: the white dress, the blue sash, the long rosary, the yellow rose on each foot, and the words of the sixteenth apparition, “I am the Immaculate Conception.”

This figure is painted with those details taken further, down to the spring on the rock — the spring Bernadette dug for with her hands at the lady’s word, which has drawn the sick ever since. It is a statue for people who know Lourdes well, or who want one that will bear looking at closely.

Where it suits

Because the shading in the mantle and veil is the reason to choose it, put it where it will be seen close to: a prayer corner, a bedroom altar, a side table in a sitting room, a May altar in a school classroom. It is made for indoors, and best kept out of strong sun so the blues stay deep.

Questions

How is this different from the other Lourdes statue in resin?
The painting is taken further — the blue shaded into the folds, a gold-edged veil, the spring at her feet and “N.D. Lourdes” on the base. The standard Lourdes figure comes in more heights.
Is it resin or marble?
Hand-painted resin. Painted finishes vary slightly between castings.
Can it go outside?
No, it is made for indoors. For outside, see the marble Lourdes figures or ask us.
How is it delivered?
Hand-painted resin is posted to any address in Ireland at one flat rate per order, however many pieces are in it, and you get a tracking link by email when it leaves us.
