Care

Dust with a dry, soft cloth. For a mark, wipe with a barely damp cloth and dry it straight away — marble is porous, and standing water leaves a ring. Never use bleach, vinegar, lemon or a cream cleaner. Acids etch the polish, and an etched surface cannot be put back. Suitable for outdoors, where it will weather slowly to a softer surface.

Delivery

Delivered to any county in Ireland for €285, or collect it free in Termonbarry, Co. Roscommon once it is paid in full — the meeting place is agreed with Thomas on WhatsApp.

If it arrives damaged, we replace it — shipping & returns.

About this piece

Our Lady as Bernadette described her at the grotto — hands joined, a rosary over the right arm, a rose on each bare foot — with the sash at her waist picked out in blue. Carved by hand in marble and standing three feet, it is scaled for a church niche, a garden grotto, or a hall that can carry a piece this size.

In 1858 a girl of fourteen, Bernadette Soubirous, saw a lady at the grotto of Massabielle outside Lourdes, eighteen times between February and July. Asked repeatedly for her name, the lady answered at last: “I am the Immaculate Conception.” The spring Bernadette uncovered there draws pilgrims from every country to this day.

The devotion

The blue sash is the one touch of colour Bernadette always mentioned, and it is the touch that tells anyone, at a distance, that this is Our Lady of Lourdes. Picking it out on white marble keeps the figure true to her description while leaving the rest to the stone.

Ireland’s parish grottos — most of them built in the Marian Year of 1954 — are nearly all Lourdes grottos, with this figure standing in a hollow of rock above a kneeling place.

Where it suits

Scaled for a church niche, a garden grotto or a hall that can carry it. Outdoors — which the shop marks it suitable for — the blue reads beautifully against wet stone and green planting; indoors, it holds a niche on its own without a lamp.

If you are restoring an old grotto, send us a photograph and the measurements of the niche and we will tell you honestly whether this figure suits it.

Questions

Is the blue ribbon painted?
The sash at her waist is picked out in blue; the rest is hand-carved marble left as stone.
Can it replace a figure in an existing parish grotto?
Often, yes. Measure the niche — height, width and depth — and ask us before you order. We would rather tell you it is wrong for the space than sell it to you anyway.
Does it need protecting in winter?
The shop marks it suitable for outdoors. A level base, drainage under it and a gentle spring wash are the main things; see the outdoor care guide.
How is it delivered?
Marble is too heavy for the post, so we deliver it ourselves to any county in Ireland, at the delivery charge shown on this page. Or collect it free in Termonbarry, Co. Roscommon once it is paid in full; the meeting place is agreed with Thomas on WhatsApp (+353 85 285 1015). Details are on shipping & returns.
