Religious statues in Co. Galway

Galway Cathedral, dedicated in 1965, is one of the last great stone cathedrals built in Ireland, and a statue of St Thérèse from St Ignatius Statues is pictured in it. Beyond the city lie Tuam, Clonfert and the Connemara pass where St Patrick is said to have blessed the west.

Three dioceses in one county

Galway city is the seat of the Diocese of Galway and Kilmacduagh. Its Cathedral of Our Lady Assumed into Heaven and St Nicholas was built on the site of the old city jail between 1958 and 1965 and dedicated on 15 August 1965. North Galway belongs to the Archdiocese of Tuam, whose cathedral in Tuam is also dedicated to the Assumption, and the east of the county to the Diocese of Clonfert, with St Brendan’s Cathedral in Loughrea.

So in much of Galway 15 August is a feast of the mother church — and Our Lady of the Assumption is a statue people here know.

Pilgrim places

  • Máméan, Connemara

A mountain pass in the Maumturks where St Patrick is said to have blessed Connacht. The old pilgrimage was revived in 1980 by Fr Micheál MacGréil SJ, and people climb to the little chapel and statue at the top on set days each year.

  • Clonfert

Where St Brendan the Navigator founded his monastery and, by tradition, is buried.

Which statues suit

For a home, St Thérèse is the statue closest to our hearts here, in painted resin or marble. The Sacred Heart and Our Lady of Knock — Knock is within easy reach of the county — are natural companions.

Connemara gardens and island homes face salt wind and rain off the Atlantic. Outside, choose marble; inside, painted resin. Resin or marble? sets out the difference.

Questions from Galway

How much is delivery to Co. Galway?

Resin statues go by post to any address in Co. Galway for a flat €15 per order, however many statues are in the parcel. Marble is too heavy for the post, so we deliver it ourselves; the delivery charge for each marble statue is shown on its own page before you order. Marble goes to Connemara, the east of the county and the city alike; free collection in Termonbarry, Co. Roscommon, is also an option for east Galway.

Is the St Thérèse in Galway Cathedral one of yours?

Yes — a St Thérèse statue from St Ignatius Statues is pictured in Galway Cathedral. You can see the photograph on our about page.

Can you deliver to the Aran Islands?

Resin goes by post to any island address the post reaches. For marble to an island, write to us first and we will tell you honestly what is possible.
