Religious statues in Co. Mayo
Mayo is Ireland’s pilgrim county: Knock, where Our Lady appeared on 21 August 1879; Croagh Patrick, climbed on Reek Sunday; and Ballintubber, the abbey where Mass has been offered for more than eight hundred years.

The great places of pilgrimage
Knock
On the wet evening of 21 August 1879, fifteen people saw Our Lady at the gable of the parish church, with St Joseph and St John the Evangelist, and an altar with a lamb and a cross. Pope John Paul II came for the centenary in 1979 and Pope Francis in 2018.
Croagh Patrick
Where St Patrick is said to have fasted for forty days. On Reek Sunday, the last Sunday of July, thousands climb the mountain, many of them barefoot, and Mass is celebrated at the summit chapel.
Ballintubber Abbey and Tóchar Phádraig
Founded in 1216 by Cathal Crobhdearg O’Conor, King of Connacht, for the Augustinians. Tóchar Phádraig, the old pilgrim road from the abbey to Croagh Patrick, about 35 km, was restored in 1987.
Tuam, Killala and Achonry
Mayo belongs to three dioceses: the Archdiocese of Tuam in the south and west, the Diocese of Killala in the north, with St Muredach’s Cathedral in Ballina, and the Diocese of Achonry in the east of the county.
Which statues suit
Mayo homes want Our Lady of Knock above all. We carry Our Lady of Knock in hand-carved marble — marble being the material we recommend for a statue at a gable or in a garden grotto, which seems right for an apparition that came at the gable wall of a church in the rain.
Because St Joseph and St John stood with Our Lady at Knock, some families pair her with St Joseph. For the kitchen, the Sacred Heart keeps its old place in many Mayo homes.

Questions from Mayo
How much is delivery to Co. Mayo?
Resin statues go by post to any address in Co. Mayo for a flat €15 per order, however many statues are in the parcel. Marble is too heavy for the post, so we deliver it ourselves; the delivery charge for each marble statue is shown on its own page before you order. That includes Achill, Belmullet and Erris; for marble we agree the date with you. Free collection in Termonbarry, Co. Roscommon, may suit you if you live in the east of the county.
Is your Knock statue blessed?
No — we never sell a statue as blessed. Ask your priest to bless it, or bring it with you when you next visit the Shrine.
Marble or resin for a grotto at the gable?
Marble. It is the material for a statue that will stand out in Mayo weather year after year. How to make a garden grotto covers the rest.

By Lough Gill, Tobernalt holy well and its Penal-times Mass rock draw crowds every Garland Sunday. Sligo town is also the cathedral town of the Diocese of Elphin.
Our Lady of Knock
On a wet Thursday evening in August 1879, people in a small Mayo village saw Our Lady, St Joseph and St John the Evangelist at the gable wall of their parish church. Not a word was spoken. Ireland has been going to Knock ever since.
Making a garden grotto
Grottos to Our Lady are part of the Irish landscape — at crossroads, outside schools and churches, in front gardens. A small one at home is within reach of anyone with a free corner and a weekend.
