County Monaghan
Religious statues in Co. Monaghan
Monaghan town is the seat of the Diocese of Clogher, which also takes in Lough Derg — so the county’s Catholic life looks both to its own Gothic cathedral and to the island across in Donegal.

St Macartan’s Cathedral
After the Reformation the Catholic diocese of Clogher had no fixed see until 1851, when Bishop Charles McNally chose Monaghan. St Macartan’s Cathedral, designed by J. J. McCarthy in the Gothic style, was begun in 1861 and dedicated on 21 August 1892. It is named after St Macartan, who founded the monastery at Clogher, in Co. Tyrone, in the fifth century.
Places of prayer
Lough Derg
The Clogher diocese’s great pilgrimage, near Pettigo just over the Donegal border. The three-day season runs through the summer, ending on 15 August.
Clones
The monastery of St Tighernach, with its round tower and high cross in the town.
Which statues suit
Monaghan homes keep the old devotions: the Sacred Heart with its lamp, Our Lady of Perpetual Help, and the Divine Mercy image of more recent decades.
For a First Communion or Confirmation in the family, a small painted statue of the child’s saint, or of Our Lady, is a present that stays on a bedroom shelf for years; see religious gifts.
For a grave or a memorial in a country churchyard, choose marble; memorial statues explains what families usually consider, and our outdoor care guide how to keep it clean.

Religious statues in Ireland
Statues of Our Lord, Our Lady and the saints for the home, the parish and the garden — hand-painted resin and hand-carved marble, delivered to every county in Ireland.
Cavan
Cavan is the heart of the Diocese of Kilmore and the birthplace of St Kilian, the Mullagh-born missionary still honoured as a patron of Würzburg. It is also a county of lakes and wet winters, which matters when a statue is going outside.
Louth
Little Louth holds two national shrines: the head of St Oliver Plunkett in St Peter’s, Drogheda, and Faughart, honoured by tradition as the birthplace of St Brigid.
Outdoor statues in Irish weather
Ireland is kind to stone in some ways and hard on it in others. Rain is constant, frost comes and goes, and wind off the Atlantic finds anything not fixed down. A little care at the start and once a year does most of the work.
