County Louth
Religious statues in Co. Louth
Little Louth holds two national shrines: the head of St Oliver Plunkett in St Peter’s, Drogheda, and Faughart, honoured by tradition as the birthplace of St Brigid.

Armagh’s county in the Republic
Most of Louth belongs to the Archdiocese of Armagh, the primatial see of all Ireland, which is why the shrine of an Archbishop of Armagh stands in Drogheda.
Shrines and holy places
St Oliver Plunkett, St Peter’s Church, Drogheda
The Archbishop of Armagh martyred at Tyburn in 1681 and canonised in 1975. His head has been kept in St Peter’s since 1921, and since 1995 in the shrine built for it there.
Faughart
North of Dundalk. In 1934 Cardinal MacRory chose Faughart as the national shrine of St Brigid. A modern Way of the Cross runs beside St Brigid’s stream, and the holy well in the old graveyard on the hill is visited all year, above all around St Brigid’s Day, 1 February.
Mellifont and Monasterboice
Mellifont was the first Cistercian abbey in Ireland, founded in 1142; Monasterboice has two of the finest high crosses in the country.
Which statues suit
Neither St Oliver nor St Brigid is in our stock catalogue; for a parish, school or sodality that wants one, a carving made to order is possible and we price it first.
For the home, consider the Sacred Heart, Our Lady of Lourdes or St Joseph. For a Confirmation, a saint the young person has chosen makes a gift that lasts — see Confirmation gifts.

Religious statues in Ireland
Statues of Our Lord, Our Lady and the saints for the home, the parish and the garden — hand-painted resin and hand-carved marble, delivered to every county in Ireland.
Meath
Meath is where, by tradition, St Patrick lit the Easter fire on the Hill of Slane in defiance of the High King at Tara, and where St Oliver Plunkett was born, at Loughcrew.
Monaghan
Monaghan town is the seat of the Diocese of Clogher, which also takes in Lough Derg — so the county’s Catholic life looks both to its own Gothic cathedral and to the island across in Donegal.
Resin vs marble
Both materials make a good statue. They make different statues, though, and the right one depends on where it will stand, who will move it and how long you mean it to last.
