Cashel and Emly

The Cathedral of the Assumption in Thurles is the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Cashel and Emly, which covers most of the county along with part of Limerick. North Tipperary belongs largely to the Diocese of Killaloe, and the south of the county, around Clonmel and Carrick-on-Suir, to the Diocese of Waterford and Lismore.

Holy places

  • Holy Cross Abbey

Founded in the late twelfth century by Dónall Mór Ó Briain to house a relic of the True Cross, the abbey on the Suir was for centuries one of the great pilgrim places of Ireland. Restored, it is a parish church again. Its relics were stolen in 2011 and, to great relief in the parish, recovered.

  • The Rock of Cashel

The seat of the kings of Munster, given to the Church in 1101. Tradition says St Patrick baptised a king of Munster there.

Which statues suit

A county devoted to the Holy Cross is a county that knows the Passion. The Sacred Heart, Divine Mercy and Christ the King are the statues of Our Lord we would suggest first; see the whole Our Lord range.

With the archbishop’s cathedral dedicated to the Assumption, Our Lady of the Assumption suits a parish or a family with a devotion to the feast on 15 August. For farm gardens and graves, marble is the material that lasts.
